50 years since one man's murder, Stroudsburg State Police still looking for answers

CRESCO, MONROE CO. (WOLF) — Back in 1970, one Monroe County man was murdered and the question still haunts everyone:

What exactly happened to 52-year-old John Leonard?

Leonard was a taxicab driver for Mick's Taxi Service out of Cresco and on September 8-exactly 50 years ago this week-he got the last call he ever would for a ride request.

At around 2:40pm on that day, Leonard was called to the Buck Hill Falls Hotel in Barrett Township.

Leonard allegedly arrived, drove toward the main building of the hotel, and a white male with dark hair around 35-years-old approached the vehicle.

The next time Leonard was seen was dead in his car with multiple gunshot wounds. This mystery is still open and unsolved.

Leonard was the father of five children, a WWII veteran, and had been a POW for over 22 months at the time. Police say Leonard was an active member with the VFW and his community.

50 years later and police are still asking for your help. If anyone has any information on this crime, please call the PSP Stroudsburg station at 570-619-6480.
