Over Two-Thirds of Monroe County Out of Work Due to Public Health Crisis

Via The Boro

HARRISBURG (MAY 17 2020) - According to data released by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, more than 22 thousand laid-off Pocono area workers applied for unemployment benefits last week, looking to join the nearly 110,000 jobless receiving unemployment benefits in the Pocono Counties of Carbon, Monroe, Pike, and Wayne. The Poconos counties represent over 3% of all unemployed in Pennsylvania.

Roughly 3.8 million Pennsylvania workers have now filed for jobless aid in the eight weeks since the coronavirus outbreak began forcing tens of thousands of Pennsylvania employers to close their doors and slash their workforces. Monroe County has 56,570 receiving unemployment as of last week, with an additional 12,520 filing claims for the first time last week. The over 69,000 receiving or seeking unemployment represents 66% of the county workforce. However, the actual number is even higher as the labor numbers released for last week do not include any of the 242,467 Pennsylvanian self-employed and gig workers who are receiving Pandemic Unemployment Assistance outside the traditional unemployment compensation system. Since March 15, the Pennsylvania has made 15.7 million payments to unemployment compensation claimants totaling nearly $7.9 billion in benefits:

  • $4.8 billion from regular UC

  • $2.85 billion from the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) program (extra $600 per week)

  • $290 million from Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program since, May 7

Regular UC claim statistics are available here and the breakdown of that data by industry and county is here. PUA claim statistics are available here.
