Taking advantage of humans is nothing new, and as can be seen, is not only a problem somewhere else.

Bridge Update 1/14/16:

In Barrett Township, staged construction begins on the Mountain Home Road (SR 390) bridge over Mill Creek the week of January 18. The bridge was built in 1956 and averages 5,556 vehicles a day. One lane of traffic will remain open in each direction during construction, which is scheduled to be complete in the summer of 2016.

The bridge on Rt 390 over Mill Creek will be down to one lane as of July 15, 2015. The bridge will remain open to traffic with a signal light in place.

Well, that didn’t take long.  Only a few months after getting rid of the Barrett Township Police Department, the ESSA Bank on Route 390 in Mountainhome was robbed.

This article may be “too little, too late,” but we can still ask questions about the way our Township Supervisors are conducting business.

1.  Why did we go with Regional over State?
Looking only at the distance between Barrett Township and the corresponding police headquarters:
- State Police Barracks in Swiftwater: 11.1 miles (19 minutes according to Google)
- Mount Pocono Regional Police: 14.9 miles (26 minutes according to Google)

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I understand the PMSD board will be further discussing and evaluating the addition of major changes to the West High School field this evening. I am very concerned that the ongoing decrease in student population may eventually lead to a closing of the West HS so the potential expenditure may be of little value long term. It seems logical to use the funds that are liberated in the selling of closed schools for other capital needs that will then allow excess tax collections to be used to reduce debt and lower taxes.

As you know all four of the districts in Monroe County (MC) are experiencing declining school enrollments and one has to ask why?  I have little doubt that high school taxes while not necessarily the root cause have exacerbated the population decline.

You and a guest are invited to attend a cocktail party hosted by Canadensis residents, Brian Long and Sarah T. Schwab.  The event will be held on Saturday, November 21st from 2pm to 5pm at the Friendly Community Center at 6683 Rte 191 in Mountainhome.  Brian is a New York producer and artist manager and is considering creating a not for profit theater company in the Barrett Township area.  He would like to meet with Barrett Township residents to discuss the viability and interest level of the idea.

Hello Neighbor!

Following is a summary of Barrett’s recent pre-election Candidate Forum held at our library.  Sue Ruskin-Mayher representing the Community Center did a great job moderating the event, presenting candidates and questions.  Three of the four candidates for Barrett Supervisor (Benjie LaBar, Patti O’Keefe, and Michele Sisak) were present as well as one uncontested candidate for Paradise Supervisor (Gary Conrad), and three of the four candidates for County Commissioner (John Christy, Charlie Garris, and John Moyer.) Sue asked each candidate to briefly introduce themselves including what issues need to be addressed, why they are running, their strengths, and how they envision leading change.

In case you have not heard, there is a pre-election Candidates’ Forum scheduled at the Barrett Paradise Friendly Library this Wednesday, October 21, at 7-8:30 PM in the Weiler Community Room.  This is a great opportunity to ask questions and discuss tax and other community issues with the Barrett candidates for Supervisor who include Benjie LaBar, Patti O’Keefe, Bill Pipolo, and Michele Sisak. Sincere thanks to our Library and Community Center for jointly sponsoring this helpful event!
